What Do Licensed Educational Psychologists Do, and How Can They Help Your Child?

Licensed educational psychologists aren’t like other psychologists. Our training and experience have a unique focus on education, so we can help students identify their learning challenges and create plans to overcome them.

By using psycho-educational assessment, we aim to discover the unique strengths of each student and the challenges they face so that we can provide professional recommendations that help them achieve social and academic success.

In order to help students achieve success, we believe in providing a more well-rounded approach. This way, we ensure that every student gets all the support they need to navigate any learning difficulties and gain the confidence they need to succeed in school.

Our Unique Qualifications

Every Mind by Design educational psychologist in Los Gatos, CA, is licensed and has the training, education, and experience to conduct professional assessments, evaluations, and tests. But that’s not all that makes us uniquely qualified to diagnose and guide students with learning disabilities.

We do everything we can to help your child find academic and cognitive success. So we work closely with private and public school systems as well as several other professionals, including:

  • Occupational therapists

  • Speech therapists

  • Reading specialists

  • Special education teachers

  • Behaviorists

By combining our expertise with that of other professionals like those listed above, we can help students from pre-school to post-secondary school address mild through severe learning disabilities. This partnership has also made us deeply familiar with the California Public Education Code, allowing us to deliver learning disabilities intervention for children in both private and public schools across Los Gatos.

We also know that as a parent, you want to do everything you can to help your child succeed. By working with you and your child’s school, we can create an environment that helps them not only overcome their unique education challenges but find success and enjoy learning.

The Steps for Our Psycho-Educational Assessment

At Mind by Design, we firmly believe that every child is unique and deserves the best chance at success, no matter how they learn. So we take a strategic approach to provide the assessment, testing, and evaluation they need to unlock their full potential.

When you contact our team, you can expect the following steps to take place:

Step 1
Background Examination

To get a better idea of who your child is, we do a thorough background check. We also take a look at their school records to gain better insight into their academic life.

Step 2

Once we get a basic understanding of your student's background and educational experience, we interview them, you (the parent), and their educators.

Step 3
Behavior Rating Scales

Behavior rating scales give us a better understanding of your student's overall situation and potential challenges.

Step 4

Next, we conduct direct testing to analyze the students academic achievement, processing, and cognitive abilities. Typically, each test lasts two to three hours and two or three sessions.

In some cases, we will also conduct autism-specific tests as well as school observations. We'll determine which type of testing your student needs with the information we get from the interviews and behavior rating scales.

Step 5

By gathering all the necessary information, we can thoroughly analyze the results of the test and create a detailed written report.

Step 6

Finally, we use our in-depth final written report to go over our findings with you so you can better understand your child's cognitive challenges. This way, we can also offer our professional advice and help you customize a plan to help your student navigate these roadblocks and find academic success.

How Mind by Design Educational Psychologists Can Help Your Child

Meeting with an educational psychologist in Los Gatos, CA, is about more than diagnosing your child with a learning disability. It’s about getting a better understanding of what’s holding them back and how to knock down their learning barriers.

We aim to do this by providing executive function coaching, ADHD assessment, and individualized education plans (IEP) geared toward your student’s individual learning situation.

Our Expertise in Learning Disabilities

Our Mind by Design clinicians have years of experience diagnosing various types of learning and cognitive disabilities, including:

  • Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

  • Social cognitive disorders

  • Dyslexia

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

It’s important to know what exactly is impacting your child’s learning experience so we can establish a plan that targets those challenges and helps the student more successfully navigate their road to success.

By meeting certain criteria, we can provide educational and clinical diagnoses. Since public and private California school systems recognize these diagnoses, we use them for IEP consulting and to develop Section 504 Plans, which give students the support and accommodations they need to overcome learning challenges.
