Emotional intelligence and perspective are vital aspects of our personal growth and interactions with the world around us. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions and those of others effectively. It enables us to navigate relationships, communicate empathetically, and handle challenging situations with grace and maturity. Developing emotional intelligence fosters better self-awareness and social skills, leading to healthier and more meaningful connections with others. Meanwhile, perspective is the lens through which we perceive and interpret the events and experiences in our lives. A positive and open-minded perspective empowers us to find opportunities in obstacles, learn from setbacks, and appreciate the beauty in diversity. Combining emotional intelligence and a broad perspective cultivates resilience, empathy, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world, ultimately enriching our lives in profound ways.

Check out my first interview of 2021 with none other than MY BROTHER, Todd Parker, Performance and Mindset Coach, Executive Leadership Coach, and College Professor. Todd and I discuss emotional intelligence, developing habits, and perspective as we start the new year. And of course, we throw some fun-loving sibling humor in along the way.

If you, your child, or someone you know, could potentially benefit from the support of a medical professional who specializes in developmental pediatrics, please do not hesitate to share this video resource. Therapy has a profound impact on transforming lives and nurturing confidence in individuals across all age groups, from children to teens and adults. By providing a safe and supportive environment, therapy enables individuals to explore their emotions, thoughts, and experiences openly. Through therapeutic techniques and interventions, clients gain insights into their inner world, identify patterns, and develop healthier coping strategies. For children, therapy can foster emotional intelligence and resilience, aiding in the development of essential life skills. Teens find a space to navigate the challenges of adolescence, building self-esteem and self-awareness. Adults benefit from therapy by addressing past traumas, managing stress, and enhancing self-confidence. The journey of therapy encourages personal growth, empowers individuals to overcome obstacles, and cultivates a sense of empowerment that positively impacts all aspects of their lives.

In this episode, I connect with Dr. Danielle Wischenka, a therapist licensed in both California and Colorado. Dr. Danielle is the founder of Better Health Therapy and is dedicated to helping children, teens, and adults feel better, and develop, improve, and transform all aspects of health. I just love Dr. Danielle’s enthusiasm for her craft and commitment to her work. Dr. Danielle’s practice is in the Silicon Valley area of California, but she is available for virtual services for clients in both California and Colorado.

Jimmie Brown is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and is as real as it gets. He has been working as a therapist in a school district for 17 years, is a consultant for the community, and has a private practice in Campbell, CA where he helps a range of individuals, from children to adults.

Jimmie’s therapeutic approach is strength-based and real. He dives deep, making a true connection with his clients, finding ways to bring out their own greatness through their work together. He connects well with children and teens, and others who can appreciate his intense, caring, and “real” approach to therapy. He uses his own experiences to shape and support his work with others and he practices what he preaches.

Jimmie’s passion for his career was sparked by Alan Thicke’s television character from Growing Pains, of all places. He loved that the character was a therapist who helped people, in an office from his home, and was able to be home and present for his kids. Jimmie thought, “I want to be like that!”

Jimmie spends copious amounts of time with his son, instilling learning, love, life and greatness. He is a fitness enthusiast, coach, husband, father, therapist, consultant, and speaker.

What a therapeutic treat! Jessica O’Connor is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who loves working with the littles! She sees children in her practice as young as 3! You may not believe that infant mental health or toddler behavior can be helped through counseling, but if you are a parent of one of these kiddos, Jessica may be your panacea!

Listen in as Jessica and I talk about her practice and specialties, including everyday challenges of kiddos 3-15, skill building, positive self-esteem, working through challenging behaviors, and improving overall emotional regulation. Watch as Jessica shares her calming and therapeutic space with us and enlightens us with some of the puppets and games that she uses in her sessions with children. Even in a virtual world, Jessica is finding her sessions to be extremely effective.

Jessica works in person, when needed, and virtually, with children and families all over California. If you have a kiddo who may benefit from Jessica’s services, just give her a call or send her an email. She will meet with you for a 20-minute consultation session at no cost to you, to see if it is a good fit.

In this interview, I talk with Virginie Goldstein, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and founder of Tech Connect Reset. Virginie’s passion is coaching parents to improve communication with their teens and promote healthy screen use. In a world where screens are the norm, how do we teach our kids to use screens responsibly rather than ban them from using them for fear they will become addicted?

Virginie has developed a protocol to support families through developing healthy relationships with screens, starting with an awareness of their own screen use and improving communication skills with their teens. Her goal is to support families in groups moving forward and expand her protocol to other therapists and throughout California, for starters.

Lexie Burns, where have you been all my life! I feel like we are long-lost kindred spirits!

Listen in as Lexie and I discuss academic and executive function needs and supports during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lexie supports students currently in distance learning and hybrid models and her team has seen it all! They have a 100% success rate of supporting students virtually.

What Lexie knows: During this time, a lot of students are being asked to become independent learners. More learning differences are being seen and it can be a bit daunting. However, there are a ton of supports and resources. It comes down to doing some research and speaking with the support specialist at your school for help. A lot of parents come to me and ask why their child is taking 3 hours for homework, consistently not turning in work even if they’ve done it, and seem unable to focus in class during the day. There are many contributing factors to a child or adolescents learning profile. The underlying cognitive skills such as memory, processing speed, visual and auditory processing, and logic and reasoning directly affect how a student learns. Not many people work on these underlying skills, but they can be strengthened by some really great programs like Cogmed, PACE, cognitive skill training. On the academic side, using modalities such as Orton Gillingham, Wilson, or Lindamood-bell is important to be able to engage the student and target the way that they learn.

Lexie Burns has an MA in Neuroscience and Neuropsychology from the University of London. She has over 15 years of experience working with children and adults in clinical and academic settings. As an educational therapist, she has seen the need for helping students with learning differences. She created NeuroPlay Academics to help children, adolescents, young adults, and adults seeking cognitive and academic support. With cognitive skill training, she is able to help support students exercise their cognitive skills and incorporate it into their academic profile. Lexie has a PACE license and is an official provider of Cogmed, she also has extensive experience with Executive Function coaching. She brings an individualized approach to enhancing attention, memory, academics, executive functions, and cognitive skills. As the head of NeuroPlay Academics, she has many years experience working with schools to help navigate support for children and young adults.

Her education center in Campbell, CA has a new schedule and a menu of service options, from all day in person support for distance learning to virtual coaching. Our conversation focuses on what students are experiencing, what PARENTS are experiencing in efforts to maintain their sanity and support their kids, and what parents can do to find balance while parenting.

Do you have a youngster who struggles with attention, energy, fine motor skills, foundational reading skills or a speech delay? Are you worried that your child may not be ready for school? Especially during remote instruction, when we are all concerned about our kiddos sitting in front of a screen all day instead of being engaged in classrooms, finding the right educators to support our students is critical.

In this episode I interview Anupma Sethi, of Empower Kidz. She is an educational therapist who uses a multi-sensory approach to build foundational skills in youngsters, helping them to be “ready to learn.” Empower Kidz is currently supporting remotely and treatment paths are individualized. Anupma and I discuss her approach to intervention for little ones and remediation for students already in school.

Individualized learning is a dynamic and student-centered approach to education that recognizes the diverse needs, strengths, and learning styles of each individual learner. Rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all curriculum, individualized learning tailors educational experiences to meet the specific requirements and interests of students. This approach empowers learners to progress at their own pace, providing the flexibility to delve deeper into subjects of interest or receive additional support in areas that require more attention. With personalized learning plans, students can set goals, track their progress, and take ownership of their learning journey, promoting a deeper understanding and retention of the material. By fostering a sense of autonomy and agency, individualized learning empowers students to become self-directed learners, preparing them to tackle real-world challenges and succeed in an ever-evolving global landscape.

Individualized learning has become increasingly relevant and impactful, especially after the challenges brought about by COVID-19. As traditional classroom settings faced disruptions, educators like Jesse Roselin, the Head of School at Pacific Prep and Tutor Corps, have recognized the unique advantages of one-on-one instruction. Individualized learning tailors educational approaches to the specific needs, strengths, and learning styles of each student. This personalized approach allows educators to address knowledge gaps, provide targeted support, and foster a deeper understanding of subjects. After the pandemic, the demand for individualized learning has surged, as it offers a flexible and adaptable solution for students, whether they are studying in-person or remotely. Jesse’s experience of over 20 years as an educator has enabled him to implement efficient and effective methods, ensuring that each student receives the personalized attention necessary to thrive academically and emotionally during these challenging times. Distance Learning

Preparing your home and your family for distance learning is going to help ease anxiety for everyone.

Raising an Organized Child, by Dr. Damon Korb.

http://raisinganorganizedchild.com/
1. Be Consistent.
2. Introduce order.
3. Give everything a place.
4. Practice forward thinking.
5. Promote problem solving.

Set up your child’s workspace somewhere other than the bed.
1. Have your child be involved in the process of setting up his or her workspace and choose a good spot for it.
2. Have daily materials ready the night before.
3. Have a quiet space with headphones. Use non-distracting music like classical, “chill out,” or video game soundtracks.
4. Have good lighting. Possibly opt for blue light filtering glasses.
5. Have a comfortable chair or seating option.
6. Get a large monitor and possibly a kid-sized keyboard/mouse.
7. Use a large wall or desk calendar to track assignments.

The process of getting back into school:
1. Read everything the teacher sends, and make sure everyone who supports the student does so as well.
2. Learn how to use the platforms.
3. Learn the schedule for synchronous and asynchronous learning time and build a schedule around it that includes breaks (have your student go outside, get air, sunlight, movement, food and water).
4. Recreational screen time should be reserved for AFTER SCHOOL ONLY.
5. Have notifications turned off.
6. Use a self-control application to block tempting websites.
7. Use a daily family calendar so your child knows when NOT to bother you.

Use positive reinforcement to reward positive behavior. It’s the easiest way to get your child to do the behavior you want to see more frequently.

Set boundaries on your own work and screen time.

Attitude is Everything. We will get through this together, and we must model for our children flexibility and adaptability, with a positive attitude. Take care of yourselves and partner with your teachers, and we will come out of this on the other side.

Listen in to hear from Margie Rubin, who is now a retired teacher and behavior specialist. She wants to support families in need of behavior support for their students as we tackle distance learning. We discuss why a child might need support for their behavior, when a good time to connect with a professional is, and how Margie can help your child have more positive behavior and in turn, improve your relationship and make distance learning easier. Behavior happens for a reason, and Margie’s expertise is in figuring out what the reason is, and helping to support the student in that need so that they don’t have to exhibit the maladaptive or “bad” behavior pattern. She helps your student feel supported and makes the experience more positive for both your student and you, as a parent. If you, your child, or someone you know, could potentially benefit from the support of a behavior specialist, please do not hesitate to share this video resource. Margie is available for free consultations and no problem is too small. She is here to help and all of her services can be provided over the phone or video call. She will help to empower you, as parents, to support your student and turn their negative behavior around.

Listen in to hear from Brittney Weinerth, occupational therapist and owner Almaden Valley Children’s Therapy Center, in San Jose, CA.
